Position Description

Learning Support Assistant (LSA) Level 3 

Job Purpose

To support the learning, development, and welfare of students, including those with additional needs and vulnerabilities, enabling them to access a broad and balanced curriculum. The role involves working primarily within the classroom, as well as delivering targeted interventions under the direction of teaching staff and the SENDCo.

Accountability

You are accountable to the SENDCo for all work undertaken and expected to maintain a proactive and professional approach in line with school policies, including safeguarding and inclusive practice.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Support individuals and small groups of students within the classroom, facilitating access to differentiated learning activities as directed by the class teacher.
  • Assist with the planning, preparation, and adaptation of resources for specific students and groups in line with learning objectives.
  • Support the implementation and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Student Profiles, or other tailored support plans.
  • Develop and maintain effective, supportive 1:1 relationships with students who require additional help, with a particular emphasis on vulnerable students and those with an EHCP.
  • Deliver and adapt intervention strategies based on the nature of student needs and agreed support levels.
  • Lead a range of allocated interventions, maintaining up-to-date records of progress and communication to ensure consistent monitoring and evaluation.
  • Support behaviour for learning through positive and restorative interactions and by promoting a safe, respectful environment.
  • Share observations and concerns with teaching staff and the SENDCo to contribute to ongoing assessment and student wellbeing.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of effective transition and induction programmes, especially for Year 6 students moving into Year 7 (supporting transition visits and writing student profiles).
  • Attend relevant team meetings, student reviews, and multi-agency meetings as required to support effective communication and integrated working.
  • Uphold and implement the school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection policies at all times, ensuring the safety and welfare of students remains paramount.
  • Combination of classroom and small group/1:1 based intervention work.

Hours: Working hours - 33.25 hours per week, term time only and training days, 8.15am - 4.00pm (Friday 3.30pm), at the discretion of the Head.

Salary: SCP 8-11

Essential Characteristics

  • Experience working with children with SEND and additional needs.
  • Leadership qualities to direct and support less experienced members of the team.
  • Understanding across a range of SEND needs.
  • A commitment to supporting the learning and wellbeing of all students.
  • Ability to work effectively under direction and as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexible and proactive approach to supporting classroom and individual needs.
  • An understanding of or willingness to develop knowledge of special educational needs and inclusive practice.
  • A calm and nurturing approach when working with students
